Marion A. Black 's StoryBirth Year: 1924Table of ContentsMarion A. Black Marion was in the class of 1941. Marion joined the United States Marine Corp in April, 1943. He did his training at Camp Elliott near San Diego, California. He gave his life in the service of our country on May 4, 1945. He was killed on either Okinawa Island or Iwo Jiima, after rescuing two wounded comrades, for which his parents received the Silver Star medal. The citation related that Corporal Black braved Japanese shellfire on Iwo Jima to go the rescue of two wounded marines. He brought the men to safety, then fell fatally wounded. Some of his classmates served as pallbearers at his funeral when he was buried with military honors on April 4, 1949, in Fort Collins, Colorado. | |
